Here Are The Pros And Cons Of Very Low Calorie Diets

By James Steele

Before beginning any diet, even an intense one, it would be wise to check it out beforehand. Some of these diets are quite effective, however they are not for everybody; it would behoove you to consult your physician. In this piece, we intend on pointing out the helpful and the harmful aspects of intensive weight loss diets.

Very low calorie diets are deemed to be unhealthy by some experts, but there's another opinion out there and some people reckon they're the key to a long life. According to one theory, based mainly on research done on animals, severely restricting your intake of calories can prevent many diseases and slow down the aging process. There are some people who go on very low calorie diets simply because they believe this view and believe that they will be able to live for longer. There's even an organization dedicated to this practice, the Calorie Restriction Society. So far, there is no conclusive research done on humans to either prove or disprove this theory, but it's something worthy of further study. From research there have been no proven benefits of going on a very low calorie diet when compared with just a low calorie diet. A very low calorie diet restricts your calorie intake at 800 calories or less, whereas a typical low calorie diet only restricts you between 800 and 1500 calories. Fluid loss usually accounts for the great amount of weight lost initially with a very low calorie diet. After a few months, however, studies suggest that a VLCD is no more effective than a low calorie diet for losing weight. Additionally, a VLCD can cause some not very nice side effects, which include headaches, fatigue, hair loss and dry skin. Even though a very low calorie diet might be best in cases where there's a medical reason, a normal low calorie diet will probably be most comfortable for people looking to lose weight.

All over the world the diet OPTIFAST is used by hospitals as a very low calorie diet. If someone is over 50 pounds more than they are recommended to be or over 30 BMI then this diet is for them. If you are only a little overweight then you should not be thinking about starting this diet. The OPTIFAST diet is operated within a medical setting, this is an advantage to you as your progress is being monitored by trained professionals. The program has such a solid track record because it started in 1974 and is deemed safe and effective, and millions of people have gone through it. You have to be truly committed to changing your diet and lifestyle for this program to work.

If you decide to attempt a food plan with very few calories, you are looking at two primary avenues. You can either go on a diet that gives you formula packets, so that you don't have to worry about counting calories, or you can restrict calories on your own. The latter option allows you more liberty; but you will need to be very conscious of what you consume. You'll have to cut out high calorie snacks, for example. There are many other great foods like fresh veggies, rice cakes, low fat yogurt and countless other healthy snacks. Carbohydrates are something to keep your distance from; if you need to eat bread; try a variety made with sprouted wheat flour rather than the processed ones. Refined sugars are not healthy and should be avoided, along with high fructose corn syrup.

In closing, extremely low calorie food programs are not the answer for all dieters, but if your physician gives you a heads up and you wish to choose the intensity, it may be helpful for you. We have covered some of the choices available, in this commentary. There is a myriad of choices out there, all open for consideration; just remember to check out your options and take heed to testimonials and related stories.
